Balinese Cooking Experience
This cooking class is a unique lifestyle experience that takes you back hundreds years and through many traditions, combining the simple humility of food with the exotic richness of Indonesia 's exciting dining and cooking culture. The classes are taken by our highly skilled Indonesian chef Iboe Soelastri who learnt to cook when she was a mere four years old and was taught by her grandmother. The class starts in the morning when you begin by choosing the dishes you like the sound of - or taste of - from Iboe Solastri's large repertoire of Javanese and Balinese cuisine. You are then taken to visit a Balinese traditional market where you will find all the freshest ingredients from island throughout the Indonesian archipelago of islands once known as the Spice Islands. While gathering the ingredients for the cooking class, you will also get a real flavour of daily Balinese life: the sights, sounds and scents of the market, and the lively bargaining between vendors and buyers.

Waoreng Djawa, where the class is held, is an experience in itself. It is an authentic, traditional humble street-side eatery recreated in the majestic Hotel Tugu, that shows the way the Javanese and the Balinese dined since the era of the Majapahit Kingdom, between the 16th and 19th centuries. There are traditional steamers on wood-fire terracotta stoves in the open kitchen, oil lamps and stone grinders. You will feel like you have gone back in time. After you finish your class you will experience a traditional dinner like nowhere else, sitting on antique wooden benches and eating Indonesian-style with your fingers, and accompanied by soothing, enchanting Javanese music.
