Bali Surfing Experience
Enroll in the School of Surf
Surf's up and school's in. World champion professional surfer Cheyne Horan and international extreme sportsman Jonni Morrison-Deaker founded the School of Surf in 1998. The School of Surf is located on popular Legian Beach where the waves are safe and easy, and the bottom is sandy - ideal conditions for students of surf to learn to master board riding. Anyone can enroll, from novices to experienced surfers.
Maintaining the highest safety standards
The School of Surf is a founding member of the Indonesian Surf School Association, an organization of school operators throughout Indonesia to ensure the highest safety standards are maintained, and it is the only surf school licensed by the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism.
Curriculum The School of Surf operates a modular style curriculum, allowing a step-by-step progression through the essential surfing skills required to allow continual improvement. Novices start by getting to know their board and learning the basic positions, as well as crucial health and safety aspects. Each class generally includes two exercises and in-depth teaching of related environmental issues. Experienced surfers select the class level at which they want to start, or they can opt to take individual classes in skills they may lack or in which they need a refresher. The curriculum is continually being developed through instructor and consultant assessment. Additional classes have recently been added including reef surfing and elite coaching for professional surfers.

Meet the teachers The school of surf goes to great lengths in training their staff in first aid, advance rescue and resuscitation, emergency procedures for the road and office, languages, service plans and curriculum training. The instructor-training program is based on an apprenticeship format with targets set for the necessary amounts of hours to be clocked and various skill levels to be achieved before they can graduate to the next level. The School of Surf is also happy to offer all students a guarantee: if you are not standing by the end of the lesson, your next lesson is free.

Equipment
The School of Surf's excellent training equipment enables student to establish correct positioning and progress easily through the course. At the same time it is designed to protect students from unnecessary injuries. The School of Surf provides sunscreen, protective surf shirts and specially designed surfing helmets for all students. Safety is of paramount importance at the School of Surf. All you need to bring are some knee-length surf shorts, a swimsuit and a towel. That's all.

Beginner Class 2.5 hours: US$59
An introduction to surfing where the students learn about boards, board handling, positioning and lying on the board, as well as theory about ocean swells, waves and tides. Then with the aid of specially designed beach boards students will be taught the correct standing position and how to move from the lying position to their feet. A demonstration is given and then the remainder of the class is spent in the water. By the end of the half-day course all students should be able to ride waves to the beach safely.
-
Intermediate Class 2-days: US$105
A continuation of the Beginner class with the second session of the day focusing on paddling skills including how to get out through breaking waves and paddle on to a wave to catch it. Students will also learn the theory of the physical mechanics of a wave and the essential surfing skills of how to spot and select a suitable wave for riding.
By the end of the day students should be able to choose a suitable wave for riding, paddle on to the wave, and surf from 'out the back' onto the beach break.
-
Three-Day Class: US$160
This course follows on from the Intermediate course. The second day concentrates on turning techniques. The students will spend more time in the classroom and then move to the waves to practice what they have learnt.
The third day focuses on generating speed while on the board, and weaving together all the skills learnt in order to tackle some bigger waves. The instructor will accompany the students in the water, pointing out key factors such as angles for take-off, as well as advising on surfing etiquette.
-
Five-Day Class: US$245
The Master Class is for those who want it all. It follows on from the advanced course. The fourth and fifth days are spent transplanting the skills learned at the beach break to one of the School of Surf's selected reef breaks off Bali's fabulous coastline. Here instructors will show you the best paddle-in points and how to pull out of a wave before it's too late and it dumps you. Once you have mastered this it's time to try surfing on shorter boards and get 'out the back' for the ultimate test. The final day focuses on riding the short board and learning manouvers such as the duck-dive and the cutback.
-
Private Course 1.5 hours: US$85
School of Surf also offers individual coaching. For those wanting an accelerated progression through our classes or for young children requiring additional attention, the private format is one-on-one tuition. You can choose any of the classes and pick from our range of experienced instructors. Also, you have the choice of location too - at the School's surf beach or an alternate location.
-
Guided Surf Trips US$50
Our surf guides can be hired for guided surf excursions and you can take your pick of Bali's top breaks. The guides will assess your surfing level and then recommend several locations suited to your ability or needs. You can get to the breaks by boat or by one of the school's vehicles, and take with you long or short boards supplied by the School. The School will also supply all other necessary equipment including refreshments, towels and emergency equipment, and direct contact is kept with the office at all times via CB radios. The clock starts ticking from the moment you hit the water not the road, so if conditions and we hit traffic you do not loose any valuable water time.
Insurance and medical matters
